Ireland Known Here
Is Detective Who Overpowered Assailant of the President.
Samuel R. Ireland, the United States secret service
detective who was guarding President McKinley at the Temple of Music on Friday,
and who was first to seize Czolgosz, whom he bore to the floor, is well-known
in Rochester, particularly among the peace authorities and government officials.
Mr. Ireland, until he went to Buffalo a short time since, was assigned to secret
service duty with headquarters in this city, more than a year ago.
He was successful in ferreting out a number of
fraud schemes planned or in operation against the government regulations in
this part of the state, his territory extending as far East as Syracuse, where
he spent some time at different intervals working on cases. To the police, Ireland
is known as a shrewd and active as well as a cautious detective.
