Dowie Will Pray for the President

Says, However, He Fears Surgeons’ Knives and Drugs Will Kill the Sufferer.

     Chicago, Sept. 9.—“Because he is suffering under surgeons’ knives and from doctors’ drugs, I believe our President will die,” said John Alexander Dowie, overseer of the Christian Catholic Church, in an address delivered at the Auditorium, yesterday forenoon. “If I should be asked to save the President I would go to Buffalo on a special train at my own expense, as fast as it could be forced. I would go into his sick chamber and dismiss Dr. Mann and Dr. McBurney and Dr. Somethingelse, and I would fall at his bedside and pray to God, and God would save him. What is the good of everybody praying to God for the President’s life, and at the same time treating the man with knife and drug? God does not save with knife and drug.
     “Whether God will exercise his sovereignty and health in spite of doctors’ drugs and the surgeons’ knives I do not know. I will pray for him. It breaks the rules to pray for a man under those agencies of the devil, but I will break the rules, and pray for our suffering Chief Magistrate. I ask you all to join me in prayer for his life.”
