Dr. Purves, whose impaired health forbids his resuming pastoral work at present, returned to town that from his own pulpit he might pay a tribute to the martyred President. After speaking of the shame as well as of sorrow which this calamity calls forth, and expressing the sympathy and admiration that all feel for the character of Mr. McKinley, he pointed out two causes of comfort—that under such a shock the government stands unshaken, and “the sublime spectacle of the President’s Christian death. Of that sublime Christian faith which was his, and in which he represented the American people, we may say indeed, This is the victory that overcometh the world. By the power of that faith he lives in death.”
