President McKinley Shot
Twice by an Insane Crank Whom the Crowd Killed Instantly.
The good people of Freehold were shocked beyond
expression by the report which reached here about 5.30 this p. m. to the effect
that President McKinley had been shot and killed by an assassin at the Pan-American
Exposition at Buffalo.
The dastardly deed was done at the Temple of Music,
at 3.15 p. m., and the infuriated mob set upon the assassin and actually tore
him to pieces.
Two shots were fired and both took effect, one
in the groin and one in the breast.
Both of the wounds are serious, and it is impossible
at this writing to obtain definite information as to the possible result of
his injuries[.]
The physicians in attendance express the opinion
that the president will recover but with the known uncertainty of gunshot wounds
in mind it is idle to prophesy.
In view of the horrid event thus recorded the
closing words of his great address at the exposition have a pathetic interest:
The president’s closing words in his address at
the Exposition yesterday were: “Our earnest prayer is that God will graciously
vouchsafe prosperity, happiness and peace to all our neighbors, and like blessings
ro [sic] all the peoples and powers of earth.”
LATER.
The name of the assassin is Frederick Nieman
of Detroit.
The president was holding a reception. He first
shook hands with the president and then emptied his revolver into him.
Immediately after he shot the president Nieman
was stabbed to to [sic] death on the spot by an infuriated spectator.
