The Americans have learned to associate the old English idea of succession in government with their own. The king cannot die is the theory. There can come in interruption of government, no interregnum; the moment the ruler dies there is “created” a new one. Hence, “The king is dead; long live the king.” The President in that general sense cannot die. McKinley may succumb to an assassin’s bullet or a dread disease, but the title is at once vested in some one else.
