Wm. McKinley
If anything were needed to enblazon
this name on the historic page alongside the names of Washington
and Lincoln, the tragic ending of his life filled the need. He was
one of the best of presidents, though having to contend with the
gravest discouragements and difficulties. Through two wars he safely
and heroically guided the helm of state and our country rose to
the dignity of a great world power through his wise administration.
He had many characteristics which fitted him for his peculiarly
trying position. Calm, conservative, firm, far-seeing, dignified,
forceful, diplomatic, honest, christian, he was the ideal man for
the situation. Fortunate for our country it was that a man of his
character was president at that particular time. His services will
be more and more appreciated as time advances and as men look at
his achievements dispassionately; and when the few great names are
mentioned of those who are esteemed greatest for what they have
done, prominent in the list as a faithful and helpful servant of
his country will be the name of William McKinley.
