Barre Anarchists
Held a Meeting Last Evening. Attempted Assassination of the President Not Discussed.
The colony of anarchists in Barre held a secret meeting on Monday evening. It is said the meeting had no bearing on the attempted assassination of the President, but was called to discuss the distribution and keeping of books owned by the society. The anarchists in Barre will talk little relative to Czolgosz’s crime but the leaders declare it to have been an act of great stupidity irrespective of the wickedness of the act. They say they have been allowed a refuge in this country with freedom to pursue their theories and that it was the height of folly to do anything to destroy their right to freedom when there was absolutely nothing to gain. They say that while they do not approve of the government of the United States it is so much superior to that of European countries they give it comparatively little attention as they are making their efforts to lessen the power of despotisms and not to make more rigorous the laws of a country in which is granted the greatest personal liberty in the world.
