A Roosevelt Experience

His Special Ran into a Hand Car Near Greenfie[l]d.

     John E. Wilbur, a lumber dealer of Upper Troy, and well known here, is the authority for an incident which escaped the newspapers in their stories of the wild rush of Roosevelt from Mount Marcy to Buffalo ten days ago. Mr. Wilbur is lumbering in Greenfield and he says the section men on the railroad there were going to their work, when they saw the Roosevelt special dash out of a cut north of Greenfield Station. They had barely time to jump for their lives when the engine struck the hand car, and it being on a curve, threw it to one side. The hand car was demolished, but none of the men were injured. If the collision had occurred on a straight track, and the car had been thrown upon the track instead of to one side, the consequences would probably have been very serious, for a modern hand car is a formidable obstacle.
