General Brooke in Command in Buffalo

Washington, Sept. 7.—Major-General John R. Brooke, U. S. A., commanding the military department of the East, telegraphed from Buffalo this morning, that he had reached there at 8.45 o’clock and had assumed charge of the United States forces in the city. General Brooke left New York last night in response to a telegram from Brigadier-General Gillespie, the acting secretary of war, to proceed at once to Buffalo and take personal charge of the regiment there. These directions were sent to General Brooke yesterday afternoon. He was instructed to use the Federal force under his command to render such assistance as might be necessary to preserve order.
