Wild Scenes in Buffalo
Mob of 15,000 Men Only Lacked a Leader to Storm the Jail.
From a Staff Correspondent of The Post Express.
Buffalo, Sept. 14.—The scene down town [sic]
last night was beyond description. At midnight The Post Express correspondent
saw 15,000 men frantic with rage, crowded by mounted police into the triangle
near St. Paul’s church. They were shouting in a frenzy of rage. “Storm the jail.”
A leader was all they needed. Mounted police were like chips on a wave when
the crowd surged back and forth.
This tremendous outburst of people’s wrath was
caused by extras put on the streets by nearly every Buffalo evening paper, at
midnight, saying the president was dead. The mistake might have been terrible
in its results.
