The Maggio Case
It Came Up Again This Afternoon for a Hearing at Silver City.
The case of Antonio Maggio at Silver City was
called for 4.10 Monday afternoon before United States Commissioner W. H. Newcomb.
Maggio demanded a witness whom he said would testify that his language and threats
were directed against his own—the Italian government. When told the man was
in Texas he stated he was ready for trial. United States Secret Service Agent
La Salle addressed the court requesting postponement of the case until next
Wednesday which was granted.
Maggio demanded an attorney, but so far the court
has not appointed any one to defend him and practically all local lawyers refused
to take his case. Additional warrants were served upon Maggio with the object
of delaying the case until the secret service men have full time to collect
all information possible.
Maggie [sic] has lately exhibited a defiant manner,
always framing his requests in the form of imperative demand and otherwise showing
an ugly disposition. Several demands he made upon United States Commissioner
Newcomb were the cause of some little merriment among the assembled spectators.
Maggio’s attempt to appear shrewd and fight all
attempts to discover anything by questioning him was looked upon at first by
officials with some degree of uneasiness, but no trouble is being found in getting
full information desired from other sources.
