Notes of the Week [excerpt]
A singular coincidence has been observable in the funeral of President M’Kinley and the case of that other martyred President, Garfield. Both hailed from Ohio, both fell at the hands of an assassin. President M’Kinley was buried on the 20th anniversary of President Garfield’s death; the catafalque and bier in which President M’Kinley’s body was borne in Washington was the same as used for both his murdered predecessors, Lincoln and Garfield, and similar simplicity in service was observed at the obsequies in each case.
