Held Up “Big Jim” Parker
Negro Who Jumped on Czolgosz Arrested by Mistake a Month Ago.
M, Wis., Sept.
15.—“Big Jim” Parker, who jumped on Czolgosz when the assassin fired the shots
which killed McKinley, was in the city a month ago and had an experience with
the police. The police had received a report that a negro had come to town who
was acting suspiciously. Detective Rooney was assigned to the case and found
Parker in the station of the Milwaukee road [sic] and questioned him. When Parker
heard who his visitor was he laughed:
“Me?” he said[.] “Why, I’se ‘Big Jim’ Parker.
Everybody knows me. I am all right.”
As evidence that he was all right Rooney was told
to examine his baggage, and when he did so decided that Jim was no thief and
apologized for his intrusion. Parker then went to St. Paul.
