Mr. George B. Cortelyou

The private Secretary to the President, Mr. Geo. B. Cortelyou demonstrated wonderful nerve and forethought at a time when the nation was on the eve of collapse by the attempt [sic] assassination of the President. That quiet dignified and classic look that always portray [sic] the face of Mr. Cortelyou was in evidence on the occasion of the cowardly attack on President McKinley. It is universally conceded that in the heat of the greatest excitement, Mr. Cortelyou was more reserved and more self possessed than any person present. There have been many private secretaries to the several Presidents but there has been none who has equaled this distinguished young secretary to President McKinley.
