Corporation Proceedings [excerpt]

     Mr. Steul moved that the following action, taken by the Board of Aldermen Monday, Sept. 9, 1901, viz.:
     “A Nation mourns. The President of the United States, a guest within our gates, has been stricken by an assassin’s bullet. Unhappily, Anarchy, a foreign institution, has found lodgement in our land and seeks to deny a free people the right of self-government. Taking advantage of our too tolerant laws and customs, it has disseminated its doctrines until one of its devotees, of native birth, strikes at our Nation’s honored Chief.
     We deplore the fact that such a condition can exist, but when the subject of assault is one so gentle, loving and lovable and on a visit to proclaim to the world a mission of peace and good will, we fail to comprehend its meaning and stand horrified at the assault.
     We here record our sincere hope that the prayers of a Nation may be answered and our beloved President be speedily restored to his people in the full measure of his health.
     Adopted unanimously.”
