Czolgosz

CZOLGOSZ. — The curious combinations of double consonants by which the peculiar sounds of Slavonic speech are expressed are sometimes a puzzle to ourselves. One of the most notable is the often-recurring cz, which is pronounced ch; thus Czolgosz, the name of the assassin of President McKinley, is pronounced Cholgosh, as Czech (often written Čech) is pronounced Chekh.

     ISAAC TAYLOR.
