C. E. Cheney

Was Close to the President When He Was Shot.

Charles E. Cheney returned from Buffalo this morning, and to The News he said he was within 100 feet of the presidental [sic] party when the president was shot.
Although he saw them carrying the body, and saw the body lying in the ambulance, it was fully 10 minutes before he knew it was the president. That it was some one [sic] in the presidential party, was evidenced at once, but the facts were not known for some little time.
It was at least half an hour before all the people on the ground [sic] became acquainted with the fact.
Within an hour, every exhibit was covered up, all bands had ceased playing, and all places of amusement closed.
He describes the crowd as something awful to behold.
