Assassin Still Confined in the Police Dungeon
He Was Not Informed of the President’s Death and
Strong Guard Watches Headquarters.
Leon Czolgosz, the assassin of President
McKinley, is a prisoner at Police Headquarters on Franklin street.
Rumors that he has been removed to the Penitentiary or any other
place are untrue.
He is still a prisoner in cell 21,
a dungeon cell in the basement of the building, into which he was
thrown when brought into Headquarters on the night of the murder.
This cell room is cut off from the
rest of the building, and scarcely any sound from the outside world
penetrates its gloomy shadows. Czolgosz is kept in absolute ignorance
of the result of his murderous attack on the President, and his
guards are not allowed to talk with him.
As an additional precaution to prevent
the possibility of his overhearing the result of the President’s
injuries newsboys are kept away from the building and they are not
allowed to cry their papers in the vicinity.
Czolgosz’s imprisonment is being made
as bitter as possible, probably with the hope of finally breaking
him down and getting from him the true story of the plot to assassinate
the President.
The vigilance of the police has not
been relaxed in the least and this morning a strong guard of police
officers is on duty at Headquarters. No mob can take the prisoner
from the police. There are advantage points where half a dozen officers
could hold an army in check.
