New York is quite a state for the nurture of vice presidents of the United States. Five former governors—Clinton, Tompkins, Van Buren, Morton and Roosevelt—have held the office of vice president of the United States, four of them after their gubernatorial terms, and one of them, Morton, just before his election in the state.
