Mob Seeks Man Who Wants to Name His Baby Czolgosz
Charles Britton, a Young Farmer, Narrowly Escapes
Violence for His
Anarchistic Admiration for Assassin.
Rochester, N. Y., Oct. 27.—[Special.]—Because
he chose to name his first born after the assassin of President
McKinley, Charles Britton, a young farmer living in the town of
Irondequoit came near losing his life to-day.
Britton, who has always been suspected
of having anarchistic leanings, has been married about four years.
Two weeks ago his wife gave birth to a boy, and the father at the
time, in the presence of the nurse and doctor who were attending
his wife, made the declaration that he intended to christen the
baby Leon Czolgosz Britton.
This morning he took the infant to
the house of a priest and requested that it be christened Leon Czolgosz
Britton. The priest refused, telling him that he ought to be ashamed
of himself.
A mob of about 200 people gathered
in front of the Britton home, a small building located on a lonely
country road between this city and the village of Irondequoit. Shortly
after a vigilance committee arrived and, entering the house, were
about to take Britton to the woods and give him a flogging.
