Burned in Effigy

WORKINGMEN AT ASHTABULA HARBOR SHOW THEIR
ABHORRENCE OF CZOLGOSZ.

Special Dispatch to the Leader.
Ashtabula, O., September 14.—Just shortly after the beginning of the noon hour at Ashtabula Harbor to-day Leon Czolgosz, the Anarchist assassin of President McKinley, was burned in effigy. The affair took place on the Hanna dock on the P., Y. & A. side of the harbor. The image representing the murderer was first hung from the rear arms of the King ore unloading machines. Following the hanging the burning took place. The hoisters had charge of the affair. It is estimated that fully 1,500 people witnessed the hanging and burning, and the excitement was intense for more than a half-hour. Nearly every whistle in the harbor blew and the din could be heard nearly three miles away. The whistles of the tugs and also of the vessels in port joined in the demonstration. The foreigners who shovel ore and coal participated in expressing their greatest contempt for the cowardly assassin. After the demonstration the laborers resumed their work.
The greatest interest has been shown at this place from the very first regarding the President’s condition. Many people waited about the bulletin boards until early this morning hoping to hear of some change for the better in Mr. McKinley’s condition.
