Assassin’s Coat Not Wanted
Porter Thinks Garment Would Be of Little Value as Clew.
Captain Porter of the secret service denied yesterday
that he had sent for the coat worn by Czolgosz, which is said to bear the label
of Ellsworth Landon, Ogden avenue and Madison street, Chicago. He asserted that
he was doubtful if any valuable information could be secured concerning Czolgosz’s
visits to Chicago, even if the coat was sent here and an investigation conducted.
“As far as I know, the coat has not been sent
for,” said Captain Porter. “Even if we did get it I hardly think it would be
of much value to us. I worked on the conspiracy matter all day yesterday and
last night, and must confess that I am now as much at sea about it as ever.”
