Foote Is Ashamed of Czolgosz’ [sic] Defense

OAKLAND, September 25.—W. W. Foote, when asked to give his opinion of the defense of Czolgosz, said:
There might as well have been no defense at all. In my opinion, nothing was done in defense of the prisoner. As an American citizen, of course I wanted to see the man hanged, but as a lawyer I must say that had I been appointed to defend Czolgosz and acted as did his attorneys I should be ashamed of myself. It would have been a much better move on the part of the lawyers had they entered a plea of guilty in behalf of their client. As it was the man’s defense might as well have been intrusted [sic] to a mob.
