News About Home [excerpt]

Dana Malone and W. G. Packard were near the Temple of Music at the Pan-American Exposition at the time the President was assassinated. They heard the shots, which outside did not sound loud enough so that people thought anything unusual had happened. They saw the ambulance that carried away the President, but it was not generally realized by the crowd outside the building what had happened, until a little later. The rumor spread that the President had been shot, but many thought for some time that someone, possibly Mrs. McKinley, had fainted.
