Prayers for the President
Baltimore, Sept. 7.—Gov. John Walter Smith this
afternoon issued a proclamation calling upon all good citizens of Maryland to
join in giving thanks for the escape of President McKinley from immediate death
at the hands of an assassin, and praying for his restoration to health. Tuesday
of next week is the day appointed by the governor.
New York, Sept. 7.—In all Jewish synagogues today
prayers were offered for the speedy recovery of President McKinley. In many
instances the rabbi mentioned the catastrophe in his address and dwelt on the
life of the president.
Minneapolis, Sept. 7.—Archbishop John Ireland
tonight sent to all the priests in the diocese of St. Paul a letter ordaining
that all pastors in their churches tomorrow, before the principal mass, shall
intone the personal psalm, “Have Mercy on Me, Oh God,” as an act of penitential
reparation for sins personal and national; and the litany of the Holy Name,
as an invocation to heaven for the return to health of the president of the
republic; that he may with renewed strength again consecrate himself to the
service of his country and of his fellow men.
