Afraid of the Mob

Judge Titus Hesitates to Act as Counsel for Czolgocz Because He
Might Ruin His Business.

Milwaukee, September 17.—Judge Robert C. Titus, of Buffalo, received a long telegram to-day from the Buffalo Bar Association, urging him to accept the appointment and make a defence of Czolgocz. The message stated that, while the natural instincts of the people were such that they wanted a speedy punishment, still the law demanded that he should be given a fair trial. If the man was insane the death penalty could not be inflicted, but if sane then he should have a trial in keeping with the ideas of justice. It should be dignified and should not be a farce, because such a trial would do more harm to law than it would do good. Judge Titus has been called up by his friends by long distance telephone and urged not to accept the appointment. He said to-night that he could not tell whether or not he would accept. Should he do so, the Judge says, it might possibly ruin the work of a lifetime.
