Ten thousand people waited to shake the hand of President McKinley at the time of his attempted assassination. Only this custom of handshaking can be considered responsible for the success of Leon Czolgosz’s design upon our president. Four days he had waited and worked in vain for this opportunity, but until the granting of this privilege to the people he could not find ample opportunity. No matter that it is one of the prided commonalities of our country, the danger of this practice is undeniable. It is time that it be eliminated from the list of courtesies that are expected from our president.
