Gossip from Gotham [excerpt]
NEW YORK, Sept. 21.—The hearts of the people have
been so saddened by the tragic death of the President that they have had little
thought of amusement the last fortnight. Mr. James K. Hackett and Mr. Royal
Moss, the manager of Wallack’s, out of courtesy to the dead and in sympathy
with the national loss closed the theatres the night of the death and the doors
were not opened until the evening following the funeral. This is as it should
be, and had the other managers followed their example they would no doubt have
earned the approval of the public.
