Brother of the Assassin of President McKinley Would Be a Policeman
That He Might Wipe the Stain from His Name.

     Cleveland, O., August 8.—Michael Czolgosz, brother of Leon Czolgosz, assassin of President McKinley, has applied for a position upon the police force of Cleveland. He said that his motive was to remove the stain from the family name, but later asked that the statement be ignored, because of the wish of his aged father, who lives with him.
     He and his father, who still can speak no more English than he did at the time of the Buffalo tragedy which thrilled the civilized world five years ago, talked volubly in Polish before this change in sentiment was announced.
     “With us that is a closed book,” he said, in a mournful manner, when his brother Leon was referred to.
     “Father just told me that he hopes our name won’t be used any more than you have to. We want to forget about it. I am willing to stand upon my own bottom, and that’s just where father wants me to stand.”
     While he was talking a glance into the next room revealed upon the walls a portrait of the young man whose murderous pistol removed from earth the third of the Presidents of the United States to die by the hands of an assassin. At the same time the nervous twitching of the hands of Paul Czolgosz, the father, showed how his thoughts reverted to the deed of his son Leon on that dark September day at the Pan-American Exposition.
