Judge Lewis’ [sic] speech in defense of Czolgosz was really more of an explanation of the position occupied by himself and Justice Titus as counsel for the defendant than an argument for the mitigation of the punishment of his client. The lawyer touched, of course, upon the only possible defense that could be offered, that of insanity, but his language showed that he had no faith in it. The position of the distinguished lawyers was a delicate one, but they acquitted themselves with honor to themselves and credit to the court.
