Feared M’Kinley’s Fa[t]e
Brother of Leon Czolgosz Asks to Be Given Protection from Assassination
During President Roosevelt’s Visit
LOS ANGELES, May 8.—John Czolgosz, brother of
Leon Czolgosz who assassinated President McKinley, was placed under arrest here,
yesterday, merely as a precautionary measure for protection to himself.
He feared violence during the presence of the
president here. He came here about a year ago and was employed as a butcher.
Lately he has been a cook in a tamale stand.
He is known here as John Hoffman, having, he claims,
assumed that name in order to live down the disgrace that attaches to his family
name.
He will be released from custody tomorrow.
