The Bertillon card, both in size and construction, resembles a stereopticon
card. One side of the card contains the information provided below. Text
appearing in black (below) represents preprinted information while that
in boldfaced gray represents information handwritten on the card. The card
was not given a handwritten number and, accordingly, no number appears below
where it otherwise ought to. The format herein is a close, albeit imperfect,
rendering of the original, with one notable exception: on the card the header
and Bertillon measurements section (left half of card) is laid out perpendicular
to the information on the second (right) half of the card.
The reverse side of the Bertillon card features a set of police photographs of Czolgosz (front and profile), the same set of photographs that appeared in newspapers at the time. MAI gratefully acknowledges the kind assistance of the staff at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society in the matter of retrieving and examining this and other related documents. |
