Wire from Wiggins
BUFFALO (N. Y.) Sept. 6.—To Gen.
H[.] G. Otis, Los Angeles: The President was shot twice by an Armenian Pole
at the public reception at the Temple of Music at 4:15 o’clock while shaking
hands, the assailant having a revolver covered with a handkerchief. One shot
entered the breastbone, the other entering between the apex of heart and stomach,
perforating the stomach, not affecting intestines. Wound not considered dangerous
unless peritonitis sets in[.] The President is conscious. Was moved to Mr. Milburn’s
residence, where Mrs. McKinley awaits him. She was not present at the tragedy.
Dr. Roswell Parke in charge. Assassin Fred Nieman overpowered immediately and
removed with great difficulty from mob. Reason given by assassin: “I am an anarchist
and did my duty.”
The fair is in darkness; everything suspended.
FRANK WIGGINS.
