Chief Wilkie’s Defence
STATEMENT REGARDING WORK OF SECRET SERVICE MEN.
Washington, D. C., Sept. 11.—Chief Wilkie, of
the United States secret service, in answer to some criticisms that have appeared
in the public press, authorized the following statement to-day:
“There were but three government secret service
agents with the presidential party. The fact that Secretary Cortelyou, under
whose immediate direction representatives of this division were acting, has
stated that our men satisfactorily discharged the duties to which they were
assigned, is sufficient for me.”
Chief Wilkie denied a statement of Assistant Secretary
of Agriculture Brigham to the effect that the secret service had more than twenty
telegrams warning it that an attempt was to be made on the life of the President
at Buffalo.
“We had no warning, telegraphic or otherwise,
of any kind[,]” said Chief Wilkie.
