Knows the Czolgosz Family
Milwaukee Man Talks of the Assassin’s Mother and Father.
Edwin L. Bender of 141 Seventh
street returned yesterday from Cleveland, O., where he has been living for some
little time. Mr. Bender was acquainted with the Czolgosz family and when the
news of the attempted assassination was received the attention of the people
in Cleveland was turned for the time being upon the family of the murderer.
“Both the father and mother of Czolgosz say that
he should suffer the penalty for his crime, and they were as much shocked as
anyone when they heard of it,” said Mr. Bender. “The father of the murderer
is at present out of work and he fears that this episode will prevent him from
obtaining it. The family is quite espectable [sic], though poor, and
is well thought of. Leon, the son, formerly worked at a place called Newberg
in a fence factory. Not much seems to be known about him there.”
