The Rooseveldt [sic] Residuum
H
own people appear to consider him something of a “dark horse.” “We forgive Teddy much for his absolute honesty,” said one. “I’m thinking that when Teddy’s done with America it will, may be [sic], require another Christopher Columbus to discover what is left of it,” said another, while the “Times” correspondent himself thinks that the gallant colonel is apt to consider “I and Providence” as convertible terms, and that anyone who recommended clemency to Anarchists would not long continue to speak of him as “Teddy,” which suggests a possible new form of punishment during his term of office—criminals to be forbidden to speak familiarly of the President. We might sum up Colonel Roosevelt, more Gilbertico, something as follows:—“Smack of Lord Cromer, Jeff Davis a touch of him, little of Lincoln, but not very much of him; Kitchener, Bismarck, and Germany’s Will, Jupiter, Chamberlain, Buffalo Bill.” It remains to be seen whether the residuum will make a President after the heart of the United States.
