Plays and Players [excerpt]
Some of the New York theatrical managers showed a singular lack of respect to the memory of the dead President by giving performances on the evening of the day Mr. McKinley died, and no less inconsiderate were those who visited the playhouses on that evening. Honor to Mrs. Moss and Mr. James K. Hackett, Mr. Oscar Hammerstein, Messrs. Weber and Fields and Mr. Henry W. Savage—all of whom closed their theatres—for paying this tribute of regret from the players.
