Not in Alpena
Leon Czolgosz Was Not Born in Alpena.
LIVED HERE 2 OR 3 YEARS
His Brother Frank Talked Freely to a Friend This Morning at Metz—
Has But Little Claim on Alpena as a Residence.
The following detailed information
concerning the life of Leon Czolgosz, was this morning furnished The News by
a particular friend of the assassin’s brother, Frank ‘at [sic] Metz station
on the D. & M. On a recent visit of a News reporter to interview Frank,
considerable information was secured a [sic] great deal of which however was
of rather an indirect nature, due to the fact that the man was very reticent
in his remarks, wishing to avoid all notoriety possible.
The information which we are now able to give
our readers is thus far the most direct yet published, and throws considerable
light upon the life of Leon Czolgosz. Frank speaks as follows:
Leon is not 27 or 28 years of age as has been
repeatedly stated in the papers. He was born in the city of Detroit either 23
or 24 years ago—he does not remember exactly which. Leon has three younger brothers—Mike,
John and Jacob. The latter was wounded in the recent Spanish American war. John
is now serving in the Philippines, while Mike is at home in Cleveland. He also
has a married sister in Cleveland, by the name of Dinbpowski.
The last Frank saw of his brother Leon was three
years ago, in Cleveland. At that time Leon was working in a wire factory. He
was troubled at that time with consumption, and he told him (Frank) that he
was going away to some other climate. That was the last he has ever seen of
him. Frank says Leon is ignorant.
All that he knows regarding the doctrine of anarchy
is what he learned from lectures, and not from reading—he was too ignorant to
read. It is true that the family resided in Alpena at one time, but only for
two or three years.
Frank was this morning shown a newspaper cut of
Leon, which he instantly recognized.
This statement coming direct from Leon’s brother,
dispels the doubt which has existed regarding the birthplace of the criminal.
Frank is absolute and determined in all his statements, and still retains the
bitter feelings toward his brother, which he expresssed [sic] in a former interview
with The News.
