New Book Denounced
Chicago Professor Criticizes Hall Caine’s “The Eternal City.”
Special to The Post Express.
Chicago, Oct. 21.—Hall Caine’s new book, “The
Eternal City” was denounced, yesterday, by Albion W. Small, head professor of
sociology in the University of Chicago, during a lecture on “Anarchy” before
senior students. Professor Small evidently believes that there is much literature
that tends to inflame the minds of people with anarchistic tendencies and thus
arouse them to deeds of bloodshed.
“Hall Caine’s last book,” said the professor,
“contains more hysterics to the square inch than any other book of which I know.
It is not worth any person’s consideration and should be tabooed by all right-thinking
and serious minded persons. The book contains many startling situations and
questions, just the kind to stir up and inflame such a mind as that of Czolgosz.”
