Outlines of Oklahoma [excerpt]
Oklahoma City Times-Journal: J. R. Blair has returned from a trip to the Pan-American exposition. He was in the Temple of Music at the reception of President McKinley, and was an eye-witness to his assassination by Czolgosz, the anarchist. Of the tragedy, Mr. Blair said: “As I saw Czolgosz, he was a tall, awkward, ignorant appearing fellow, apparently as strong as Hercules. The newspapers say he was well dressed. I regarded him as being plainly dressed, and as he lay on the floor after the officers had felled him, I noticed particularly that his coat was anything but new. He had $4 in his pocket when searched. The negro who participated in the arrest of the assassin was lionized when he got outside the building, and made much of it. He sold the buttons off his clothing for $5 each, and he was offered $50 to appear for one night in a local concert hall. I heard him state that his intention, when he discovered an attempt at assassination was being made, was to get between the president and the assassin.”
