Deputies Are Back from the Trip to Prison

     Relieved of the strain of guarding the murderer of the President, Sheriff Caldwell and his corps of deputies arrived from Auburn at 1:22 o’clock yesterday afternoon. As described by the Sheriff the trip with Czolgosz to the place of his execution was one of anxiety. With the Sheriff on the return trip were Jailer Mitchell, Supt. Sloan of the Penitentiary and Deputy Sheriff Bates, who preceded the party to Auburn in order to make arrangements for the transfer of the prisoner.
     “After Czolgosz had talked during the trip,” said Sheriff Caldwell, “he fell into a stupor again, and when we reached Auburn he seemed hardly able to realize where he was. Certainly the prisoner was as unwelcome there as he was here, but we were anxious to get rid of him, for as soon as we did so, we stopped the expense to the county and relieved ourselves of the constant strain.
     “At Auburn the citizens were told that the prisoner would arrive on a special train later in the day. This was done to avoid a mob scene. But when the time came for the arrival of the supposed train, there was a mob, and if we had come then, I am afraid there would have been trouble.”
     Sheriff Caldwell was so overcome by the strain of the trip that immediately upon his arrival in Buffalo he was compelled to go home.
