Court Room Bulletins
2:15 P. M.—THE PRISONER HAS JUST
BEEN TAKEN BACK TO THE JAIL ATTENDED BY THE POLICE.
1:54 p. m.—The prisoner has just been brought
into the court room handcuffed to Detectives Geary and Solomon. He was preceded
by Assistant Superintendent of Police Cusack and Jailer Mitchell, with two policemen
following.
1:50 p. m.—Considerable gossip in the City Hall
connects Philip Bernhard criminal deputy [sic], as the one who will take Czolgosz
to Auburn.
CROWDS OVERPOWER POLICE.
1:30 p. m.—The crowd storms the
court room and the police are utterly unable to cope with it. Patrolmen are
borne back. Messenger service is almost impossible.
1:15 p. m.—Great crowds are arriving about the
City Hall and the court room is already crowded to suffocation, the only vacant
places being the spaces allotted to the prisoner and counsel.
1 p. m.—A detail of fifteen patrolmen, under Capt.
Regan, went on duty, closing the City Hall against all comers, excepting the
holders of passes.
Czolgosz made a speech before he was sentenced.
He said his father and mother knew nothing about it and he didn’t plan it until
two days before the crime.
